Camels known as the “Ship of desert”, Camel have been the major mode of transportation in deserts and are the lifeline for the desert people. Camel Safari has been an experience that is happening since the ancient times, when man developed no other modern means of communications and animals were the sole transport used for communication.

Types of Camel
India is only place where you can enjoy two types of camels. Single hump Dromedary Camels and double hump Bactrian camel.
Safaris
Duration of camel safaris differ. It depends a lot on the destinations that shall be covered. It is obvious that safaris of shorter duration shall cover less destinations while longer duration safaris shall cover more destinations. The duration may range from a single day to a month or even higher. It may be mentioned that one or two week safaris are the most popular. Different types of safaris are offered to suit the needs of different tourists.
Ladakh is also having Camel Safari, mainly in Nubra Valley from Hundar to Diskit and it can be organized in Leh as well. The double hump Bactrian camels are called the 'Real Camel'. These are the descendants of those camels, which were used for riding and transportation in the 'Silk Route' in 18th and 19th century.
Best Time For Safaris
Safaris are arranged in winters from October to February. Winters in the region are pleasant and are the most propitious time for safaris in desert of Thar. But, in Ladakh camel safari is carried out in the cold deserts are arranged in the months of June, July, August and September.
Precautions
Organizers take all necessary precautions before embarking on a safari. All necessary arrangements in the form of food, tents, sufficient water, foam mattresses, medicines and other required items are made well in advance. Still, on the personal front, certain things should be kept in mind. As desert conditions are dry, lots of water should be consumed to avoid dehydration. Sunscreen lotions could also be applied on the body to avoid sunburns. Tourists having a history of chronic ailments should consult their doctor first before embarking on a safari. But it is always advisable to act according to the instructions of the tour guides as they are the best people to guide on the spot.
In Leh take complete rest for first 36 hours on day of your arrival. However, this period may vary with different people. Shirt and shorts can do during the daytime but in evening one needs jacket or pullover. While camel safari you need warm cloth at nights. Sometimes there is a rain or snow I early june therefore you need wind sheeter or raincoat. Shoes good waterproof or extra pair shoes and good spacious rucksack is needs to carry your items of use.
